My Beliefs As An Educator For Over Nineteen Years Essay

My Beliefs As an educator for over nineteen years, I have witnessed many different styles and methods of teaching and learning. Reflecting on past years I see many different factors that have built my beliefs and philosophy on leadership, teaching and learning. While some beliefs have been established through formal education; most are a result of observation, trial-and-error, field-tested, real-time, relevant learning experiences. â€Å"Learning is how people make sense of their experience – learning is the construction of meaning from experience.† (Merriam Bierema, 2014). While one sentence cannot define completely; this statement helps to define my beliefs. Also, self-directed learners, whether described as being personal or as a process; helps to define my beliefs. It is impossible, in my opinion, to learn everything in formal settings. Learning is lifelong, everyday for everyone. Some embrace and grow, others become stagnant or complacent. Self-directed learning i s about growing where you are. As a leader, we must provide the foundation for learning and support our learners. We must continue to grow and learn ourselves in order to be successful leaders. As I have read and the class has discussed the chapters in our text, I can say most of the emphasis on my learning style is based around the constructivist theory. I believe that most of our learning is based on prior knowledge and experiences.
